How to Make Firefox Load Faster

Firefox may run quickly but it loads slowly; here's how to fix it. (This tip is for experienced computer users only.)

You can slash Firefox's slow load time by compressing the DLLs and executables. There are many choices for compression but I suggest you use UPX which is free, efficient and time proven.

1. Download UPX from http://upx.sourceforge.net/#download

2. Unzip upx.exe into your Firefox installation folder which is normally C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox.

3. Make sure Firefox is not running then shell to a command prompt in the Firefox installation directory.

4. Type in the following command in a single line and hit return:

for %v in (*.exe *.dll components\*.dll plugins\*.dll) do upx "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\%v"

5. If on some later occasion you want to unpack the files, just type in the command above but add the decompression switch "-d" after "do upx."

That's it; enjoy the difference!

I tried it on an old 450Mhz XP laptop with 512mb. FFox definitely load faster, maybe 2x faster. It runs at the the same speed tho. - Ken

Make it LOAD faster. It

Make it LOAD faster. It doesn't make it WORK faster.

The difference is quite noticieable on old computers. Of course if you have the latest greatest 2Ghz+ monster the difference will be less than one second.

Improving the speed of an

Improving the speed of an internet connection and Computer. These are things I have read about quite a bit.

Currently I am stuck with Free Dial up, a direct connect through a modem, and just using the OP system, and a browser. Of course this is better than having to use other freebies such as Netzero , etc, who force one to use their advertising scheming software taking away your bandwidth. With dial up, it is a must to achieve max page loading..possible. LOL

Oh by the way, don't use AOL if you desire a faster internet connection and if you want to know why, email me and I will explain why using AOL is slower than having the Phone or cable company for DSL. Remember DSL is digital, and Cable is Digital. Don't let the names throw you, as to looking at the transfer rates in the packages you buy. Actually, Your data transfer is only as good as your computer, the connection of the hardware you are through with your provided, and the route it takes over the web, and weather it goes over Internet 1 (old internet) or internet 2 (fiber optic internet). Unless the cable companies are connected directly to the backbone of Internet 2, then it's like going from residential, to the freeway in your car, then back on the highway, and then back home.. All these things slow your connection down, along with the server you are talking to, and how may people are connected and talking to the same computer with their computers.. Companies with more than one server, can handle the world load, better than others. anyway.... back to speeding up your computer and computer connection.

Currently I use ACE explorer, IE, FireFox, Netscape and Opera.. Upon improving my connection, I do believe IE is the slowest of all, before I made changes and still the slowest after I made changes. The purpose of using them is pending on what I am doing on the web. I approached the "I want to Speed my connection". My background is in computers, and one there are things to keep in mind The internet is a serial connection, sustained through high compression. I believe now a days, this is very effective, as to the past, cause the compression was very as good as now. Remember when a modem was v34. were in use, for example, some V.34 Modems can transfer data as fast as 230.4Kbps with compression and as fast as 28.8Kbps without compression. You have to remember this, it takes time to decompress a file and then use it. So unless the ratio of compresson is very great, compressing a dll may indeed not be the answer to speeding up the connection. As today, V.92/V.44 my operate at speeds around 300,000 bps, approximately which is half the speed of most broadband services ( 600,00 bps to 1,500,000 bps).

One would have to compare the ratio of expanding a file and using it, to just using it in it's normal state. You have to remember that not all binaries compress very well. We all know that, from using zip files all the time. There are other ways to speed up your computer by 25%. Others post, 20%, but in looking at it the right way, if you are operation at 80% capacity, and increase up another 1/4 of your current speed to operation at 100%, then you are increasing your speed 25%, and not 20% like others boast. I guess all these geniuses out here, don't know math like some of us..

I have noticed my connection loads faster now, as to what I saw before I made the typical adjustments. These included using a proxy, which I won't explain here. But it's a factor.. I have seen it work on two computers at someone's home using dial up, and the faster computer (1ghz) serving as a proxy, actually loaded pages slower than the computer (166mhz) that was proxied to the faster computer, until the ettings were changed as a result of my comments. Other ajustments were those made in the Registry, as to releasing the use of networked assignments of certains things like printers which slow down the computer. I also, unchecked the Qos protocol, and kept only TCP/IP checked. My computer runs fine.. It said, the Qos scheduler, causes your computer to reserve 20% of it's bandwidth from being used otherwise some where else.. I have seen my bandwith go from 6kbs to the use of two downloads at the same time at 4.2 mbs to two at 3 and 6, as to three at 2kbs at the same time. So I believe all that I did helps. I may try compressed dll sheme on here that is stated on here. A new computer may not show much change, but an Old one at 633mhz may..
I also noticed that my proxy server FREE PROXY stores all cache in binary files. I guess this helps..

Of course knowing about a ram drive, I decided put my cache folder on a ramdrive. It never dawned on me to research it, but while looking for a free ram drive, cause the articles about ramdrive.sys seem not to work and their so much registry tweaking to do, so I removed it. However I found a place to get one that is executable from dos while running windows. I know this will speed up displaying items on the screen..

Other things that I find helpful, in running your computer fast is a must, is a registry cleaner. ARGENTE so far the MOST effective that I have seen even verses the Eusing free registry cleaner, Argente registry cleaning is as go as the trial ones, that you then have to pay for. It doesn't stop there, from reading, you need a Registry defragger too, so your system doesn't have to hope around like it does on a harddrive. I think that makes sense. After loading and unloading about 60 freeware programs on my computer, it took a long time to load. First , I noticed 5 mins, then it went up to 30 mins. Another factor involved in not screwing up your system as they claim XP is better now than before, I say no, as to sudden shut downs, IE power loss. I believe part of my factor of slowness is due to the loss of data and/or corruption that may happen as to such things.. Uninstalling software leaves stray stuff. Using software leaves broken entries in the registry. Removing registry entries leaves gapping, causing slowness, and lastly, in order to better the performance and not having to re-install the Op System, I disabled write behind caching. They say this slows the system down, but does it really. If this is so important to running the system, then why cache system writing if it isn't needed right away. I disable this so if my computer shuts down, for whatever reason, I don't loose data needed for operation that is hung up somewhere in cache that can be lost and cause my system to slowly malfunction. So far after these changes and with Breaker problems, cause of the GFI being sensitive to tripping the breaker, I have found my computer lasting longer without a re-install of the OS..

Currently I have twice as much freeware on my computer now, and it runs better than before, as a result of all the things I mentioned here. I only have 128mb + 64mb for mem..

Factors to a faster computer do include what I mentioned... Having more MEMory is important too, and can run more things without hanging up. Having a fast harddrive is a factor. The bus speed on the mother is an important factor. Remember, your computer is only as fast as your motherboard and the memory on it. The faster the CPU, the more caching you need, especially if you upgrade the CPU on the same motherboard. Think of it as this: the bus front and back may be the same or in cases, for example, on one motherboard I remember, it had 800mbytes/sec front and 400mbytes back, is better than having an older computers with 133 or 166 bus speeds.

Imagine how fast your computer would really be if you took your 3gig CPU and put it on a board with no copper traces and all fiber-optic connections to all the chips. The computer will truly operate at its full potential when supplying connections at the speed of light, wouldn't it? Like I said, it's like having a race car (cpu) and driving it on the street and freeway (current mother boards) and never on an open road where there are no speed laws (future motherboards).

sorry I wrote so much. I guess I was bored......

I'm no techie either, so I think I'm missing something. This however will speed up Firefox after it finally does load, works good.

re: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1299854/posts & http pipelining

I'm not trying to be negative or anything, but I read an article which explained that the reason that http pipelining was disabled by default was because of incompatibility with adobe flash, resulting in pages with flash videos not working properly. However, it is also reported that most of these issues seem to have been resolved as of Firefox 2.0.0.8, so maybe for post 2.0.0.8 users and us Firefox 3 beta users this will not be a problem.

Hm, can't understand why

Hm, can't understand why this would really make a difference, in fact it should cause problems, as more memory would be needed as you would have to decompress the UPXed files. There would also be problems with updates, as Firefox would have to download full updates instead of patch files, if indeed it could still update itself. Much more useful would to minimise the number of addons you install, as well as watching which ones you use, as some add-ons slow down firefox more than others. This how-to only really applies to USB flash drives, which have very poor access times.

If you don't mind sacrificing a little memory, a program such as firefox preloader would do the job nicely. It loaded just the core of firefox into memory, without actually starting firefox, which is exactly what Internet Explorer does. However, it has not been updated in a few years, and only worked with Firefox 1.5.x. It could be made to work with Firefox 2.x by disabling the session restore functionality. I haven't tested it to see if it works with Firefox 3, as I'm happy enough with it's slow launch speed as I leave it running all the time.
